The most popular passwords per country in 2024 -

We live in a digital world, and while biometric password are slowly taking over typed ones, we still use them. There are several recommendations when it comes to creating strong passwords, including the number and type of characters used, but millions of people still use some of the most basic passwords out there, which exposes them to the risk of being hacked. 

Cyber security and password manager company NordPass, in collaboration with NordStellar, analyzed the password habits around the world for 2024. In total, a 2.5TB database was extracted from various publicly available sources and analyzed. Here are the results for 30 countries. Click on.

Australia -

In Australia, the most popular passwords are password, querty123, and 123456. For more unusual entries, we have lizottes, ranked sixth, and pokemon, in sixteenth position.

Austria -

Many Austrians like to use 123456 as their password. This is followed by 123456789 and Abcd1234. At number 14 we have an interesting entry: michael.

Belgium -

The passwords 123456, querty123, and qwerty1 are the most commonly used in Belgium. This is followed by azerty, which is a layout of characters common in Belgian keyboards, very much like querty is in other parts of the world.

Brazil -

The South American country has a preference for 123456, querty123, and querty1. In ninth position, we have brasil.

Canada -

Canadians love their querty123, but they also like 123456 and qwerty1 a lot. The odd one out comes at number 18 with the very Canadian password: hockey.

Chile -

In Chile, the most commonly used passwords are 123456, 12345678, and Chile. The eighth is colocolo, the name of a soccer team.

Colombia -

Colombians like to use passwords such as querty123, qwerty1, and 1245678. The password Colombia comes in at number seven.

Czech Republic -

Popular passwords used in Czechia include 123456, 12345678, and 12345. Several names also appear in the top 20, including martin, michal, and veronika.

Denmark -

Passwords in Denmark are also dominated by classics such as 123456, querty123, and querty1. In the twelfth and thirteenth positions come mikkel and hejmeddig.

Finland -

The top two passwords in Finland are commonly used by millions of users around the world. These are querty123, and querty1, respectively. The third most popular one is salasana, which means password in Finnish.

France -

The most used passwords in France are 123456, 123456789, and azerty. In the seventh position, we have the very French password marseille.

Germany -

Germans like their numbers. The nation’s most popular passwords are 123456, followed by 123456789 and 12345678. The first odd entry comes at number 11 with dragon.

India -

Indians keep it simple with 123456 as their most popular password. This is followed by password and 12345678. In the ninth position, we have the local india123.

The Irish like to keep it simple with 123456, password, and qwerty123. This is followed by liverpool in fourth position.

Italy -

Italy’s most popular password is 123456. Unlike most nations, the second most popular is not one of the most obvious. Instead, it’s cambiami. As for the third position, Italians also like 123456789.

Japan -

In Japan, the most commonly used password is 123456789, followed by password and 12345678. Normal words are not in the top 20, but some Japanese seem to like to use keyboard patterns to craft their password. An example includes 1qaz2wsx.

Malaysia -

The most popular passwords in Malaysia are 123456, qwerty123, and 123456789. The more local password sayang can be found in thirteenth position.

Mexico -

Mexicans are also fans of classic passwords. Their favorites include 123456, 123456789, and qwerty123. Interestingly, names are also commonly used. At number thirteen, for instance, we have alejandro, and in sixteenth position, carlos.

Netherlands -

The Dutch like the classic querty123, querty1, and 123456. The fourth most popular password is welkom01.

Norway -

The most popular passwords in the northern European nation are querty123, querty1, and 123456. Then we have local words such as passord and hemmelig further down the list.

Philippines -

Many people in the Philippines like to use 123456, qwerty123, and qwerty1 as their passwords. At number eight we have the cute iloveyou.

Poland -

The most commonly used passwords in Poland are 123456, qwerty123, and querty1. In the ninth position comes the local word polska.

Portugal -

In Portugal, it’s all about numbers. The top passwords are 123456, 123456789, and 12345. The name of soccer clubs are also popular, with benfica coming in at number nine and sporting in the eleventh position.

South Africa -

The most popular passwords in South Africa are 123456, password, and qwerty123. In the nineteenth position, we have the more creative, albeit still very easy to crack, 123love.

Spain -

Spain sticks to numbers in the top three, with 123456, 123456789, and 12345678, respectively. At number four we have a local one: España.

Sweden -

In Sweden, the most common passwords are 123456, querty123, and qwerty1. In the fifth position comes a more original local one: hejsan.

Switzerland -

Switzerland shares the top three with many other nations. We’re talking about 123456, querty123, and qwerty1. Interestingly, at number fifteen of the ranking comes the password portugal, perhaps due to the high percentage of Portuguese immigrants living in Switzerland.

United Arab Emirates -

In the UAE, the most used passwords are 123456, 123456789, and qwerty123. Interestingly, pakistan comes in at number eleven on their list.

United Kingdom -

Brits like to keep it traditional with password as the most common password in the country. This is followed by querty123 and qwerty1. At number five in the ranking we have a very English password indeed: liverpool.

United States -

Americans’ favorite password is secret. This is followed by 123456 and the classic, password. There is one popular and unique password at number fourteen in the US ranking: baseball.
