If you want to bring someone to a person’s home, it’s best to ask them in advance. A surprise extra guest can be an embarrassing situation for everyone.

Electricity is expensive, not to mention that it is not environmentally friendly to waste energy. Take extra care to turn off unnecessary lights when you’re at someone else's home.

Taking a long time in the bathroom -

When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go. But that doesn't mean you have to monopolize the bathroom for half an hour.

This includes if you’re taking a shower. Not only will you prevent other people in the home from using the bathroom, but you’ll also use a lot of water and energy, which you’re not paying for.

Criticizing the food -

This is just rude. If you’re a guest, you shouldn’t criticize the food your host is offering you. This is not to say you have to like everything that’s thrown on your plate, but don’t diss it.

Playing with the thermostat -

Whether it’s central heating or AC, your host should be in charge of their home's temperature, not you.

Not helping out with the dishes -

Your host may oppose it, but it’s nice of you to offer to do the dishes or load the dishwasher. At the very least, take your dishes to the sink.

Arguing with your partner -

Leave your domestic issues at home. As a guest, you don’t want to be arguing in front of everyone. This is really awkward, for all present.

Bringing pets (without asking first) -

To do so is pretty inconsiderate. Your host might be allergic, be afraid, or simply not want animals in their home. If you want to bring your pet with you, discuss this beforehand.

Overstaying -

It’s okay to accept your host’s hospitality, but there’s a fine line between being welcome and being a pain. Be attentive and look for cues that indicate it’s time to leave.

Breaking stuff -

Sure, you won’t do it on purpose, but some accidents can be prevented. If you don't know how something works, better to ask.

We all check our phones from time to time. But endless sessions of doomscrolling will just signal that you’re bored and not enjoying your host’s company.

Pigging out at your host’s expense is just rude. This is especially true if food is being shared between other people.

The same goes for drinking, especially if it involves alcohol. Now you're not just rude, but rude and drunk. In which case, it’s good manners to add your own drinks to the table (i.e. don’t bring a bottle of pop and drink all the wine).

If it’s not your home, don’t hog the TV remote control. Should your host really be forced to watch your favorite shows?

Leaving your stuff lying around -

Leaving your belongings spread across someone's home is not very nice. Hang your coat, don’t leave your socks in the bathroom, keep your phone and other stuff in a designated area of the home, and so on.

This one stands true, even for men visiting their buddy’s bachelor pad. Put the seat down to prevent water (and other stuff) from splashing everywhere. It's just good manners!

We’re talking about doing so on furniture. Your host may want you to feel at home, but when it comes to putting your feet up, there’s a fine line between being comfortable and being rude.

Drinks can leave marks on tables and other pieces of furniture. The solution is to use coasters. Check if there are any available, or ask for them.

Even if you attend a big party at someone’s home, be mindful not to make a mess. Mind your drinks and food, as well as things such as wrapping papers, balloons, or any other party accessories.

Rule of thumb -

Putting yourself in the shoes of your host usually does the trick. You can't go wrong if you follow this simple mantra: always treat your guest's home as you'd want your home treated.
