The ranking was assembled by List25 and considers places with a high quality of life at an affordable price. It takes into account the following: the ability to own a good-sized home, access to low-cost transportation, and affordable healthcare, all while having enough money left over not to have to worry too much about your budget.

The following slides will count down 25 countries with the lowest average cost of living per month, with a bit about what makes each destination desirable. However, some of the countries on this list are affordable for foreigners while locals struggle with serious social, political, and economic problems.

25. The Czech Republic - The capital city of Prague is one of the safest cities in the world and at US$1014 a month, The Czech Republic is a place that draws in people worldwide. Luxury meets old-world charm in this country.

This destination offers English speakers a great option as it is the primary language! South Africa is home to a lot of diverse natural life and has an average cost of living of just US$937 per month.

22. Chile -

Chile has one of the highest costs of living on the list, however, it still comes in at just US$905 dollars per month. Chile is known for its friendly locals and ‘buena onda,’ or ‘good vibes.'

21. Poland -

Poland is a hub for world history buffs as well as those who love to explore national parks. It is also one of the cheapest European countries to live and work in. Coming in at US$882 dollars a month for the cost of living, Poland is prime for those looking for luxury without the hefty price tag.

20. Belize - The Caribbean is chock-full of beautiful wonders and has a rich history. Belize has a population of slightly over 405,000 people and a monthly cost of living of US$889.

19. Costa Rica -

Costa Rican beaches and tropical air draw in visitors from near and far. With an average monthly cost of US$852 dollars, Costa Rica is prime for the luxury life without breaking the bank.

18. Thailand -

With an average monthly cost of only US$831 dollars, Thailand is known for clear waters, white sandy beaches, and being a generally luxurious place. It is often called ‘the land of smiles.'

17. Fiji -

Fiji is made up of 333 tropical islands and is known for its beautiful landscapes and coral reefs. It has a population of almost 900,000 and its capital city is Suva. For US$773 a month, you could call FIji your home!

16. Honduras - Known for sharp mountain ranges and volcanic highlands, Honduras has a population of over nine million people and is over 44,000 miles in size. For US$765 dollars a month, this beautiful place could be your luxurious new home.

15. Ecuador - Ecuador is a South American coastal country where you’ll get to enjoy comfortable weather and bountiful nature. For an average of US$756 per month, you can live in Ecuador and experience everything it has to offer.

14. China - With an average cost of living of US$752 and a booming economy, China has lots to offer. The culture, including food and art, make China very unique.

13. Bolivia - The South American country of Bolivia is bordered completely by five countries: Brazil, Peru, Paraguay, Chile, and Argentina. It also has two capital cities! Just US$750 dollars a month makes Bolivia a very affordable country to live in.

12. Serbia - Serbia has over 200 monasteries from the Middle Ages and boasts historical artifacts from Byzantine, Baroque, and Romanesque times. Its average monthly cost is US$711 and the locals are known for being friendly.

11. Mexico -

Mexico has 123.5 million people and is the second-largest Latin American country in the world. It is also the most populated Spanish-speaking nation in the world and has an average cost of living of US$678 dollars.

10. Bulgaria - Bulgaria is relatively close to countries like France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey making it a prime place to call home. For US$654 dollars per month, Bulgaria can offer you luxury and affordability.

9. Malaysia -

This Southeast Asian country is renowned for its white-sand beaches, ancient rainforests, and gorgeous islands. Malaysia has a population of about 33 million people and the capital city is Kuala Lumpur. You'll only need around US$652 a month for the basics here.

8. Vietnam -

Vietnam is the second largest Southeast Asian country in terms of population with 97.34 million people. Bordered by China, Laos, Cambodia, and the South China Sea, Vietnam’s cost of living is about US$639 dollars per month. It has beautiful views and lots of exotic cuisine to try!

7. Nicaragua -

Though Nicaragua is one of the poorest counties in the world, the capital city of Managua is still the largest in Central America. Affordable luxury comes in at an average monthly cost of US$633.

6. Peru -

While Machu Picchu is what many people think of when they imagine Peru, it also has an amazing history and other beautiful nature spots. The average monthly cost of living in Peru is US$630, making it a great affordable option.

5. Papua New Guinea -

Though Papua New Guinea is one of the least developed countries worldwide, it is rich in resources, has beautiful landscapes, and is home to lots of welcoming locals. At US$530 dollars on average per month, you could make this your exotic luxury home.

4. Colombia - Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world and is found in South America. Colombia is known for its amazing climate and boasts a monthly living cost of just US$574 dollars.

3. The Philippines -

An island nation in Southeast Asia,  the Philippines is made up of more than 7640 islands divided into three regions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. An affordable life is possible in the Philippines with just US$601 needed for expenses.

2. Egypt -

Egypt is the second-oldest civilization in the world and was established in 3100 BC. It borders Africa and the Middle East and has a cost of living of US$449 on average per month. In Egypt, luxury comes in the form of world-renowned history and gorgeous monuments.

1. Pakistan -

Tensions in the Middle East with the US could contribute to the low expenses found here. At only US$370 dollars a month on average for expenses, Pakistan could be a cheap place to find luxury. The economic hub and largest city of Karachi is the recommended place to find city life at a fair price in Pakistan.

Important considerations -

It’s important to note that some places are more affordable to live in because they’re underdeveloped and are plagued with problems like poverty, the effects of climate change, and political corruption (amongst others). It's advised to check with your country’s travel advisory department for the most up-to-date information before making any decisions, and consider the ethical issues that arise from contributing to the gentrification of developing areas.
