South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, impeached over a failed martial law attempt on December 3, 2024, has resisted arrest, remaining holed up in his residence. Despite facing potential arrest, imprisonment, or even the death penalty, Yoon remains defiant towards the police.
Although Yoon is suspended from his duties, he remains in office until the Constitutional Court confirms his impeachment. In a recent turn of events, the government has announced that he will still receive his annual pay rise, despite being impeached for briefly imposing martial law.
Yoon's salary will increase by 3%, reaching 262.6 million won (US$179,000; €166,000), in line with the standard pay rise for government officials. The news of Yoon's salary increase has sparked criticism in South Korea, with some people saying they can't believe he's still getting paid and receiving a raise while he's suspended. Meanwhile, investigators are planning another attempt to arrest Yoon and have asked the police for help.
