Later that month, on June 24, Charles attended Royal Ascot for the first time as king. Ascot is Britain's most famous racecourse, hosting thoroughbred horse racing, with the Royal Ascot, thanks to its long association with the British royal family, being one of the world's most prestigious race meetings.

July 5, 2023 -

On July 5, King Charles headed north of the border to attend the National Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh. During the ceremony, the king and queen were presented with the Honors of Scotland. Also in attendance were Prince William, Prince of Wales, known as the Duke of Rothesay while in Scotland, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, known as the Duchess of Rothesay.

July 10, 2023 -

The new King Charles III UK passport was unveiled on July 18. The announcement marked the first time the documents have used the title "His Majesty" in 70 years. Incidentally, the one person who never needs a passport is the king himself. By convention, the monarch does not have to carry a passport to travel, because it is a document issued in his own name.

On the first anniversary of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2023, King Charles issued a message, which read: "In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty's death and my Accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us. I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all."

The following month, the king flew to Kenya for the first state visit to Africa of his reign. The British monarch delivered a speech on October 31 during a state banquet hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto at the State House in Nairobi. Facing pressure to acknowledge British colonial actions, he accepted the "abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence" perpetrated during colonial rule, but did not formally apologize.

Republic advocates the replacement of the UK's monarch with a non-political head of state elected to a ceremonial or constitutional position to represent the nation.

King Charles III was admitted to the London Clinic on January 26, for what was believed to be routine treatment for an enlarged prostate. He was discharged on January 29, met by his wife. But speculation was rife as to the exact reason for his stay.

Then on February 5 in a statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Charles has cancer. "During The King's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted," the statement read. "Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer." The news made headlines across the world, and left the nation in shock.

Most royal commentators agree that Prince Harry's criticisms of the British royal family haven't dented a king praised for his low-key approach, neither has the scandal surrounding the disgraced Prince Andrew.

The percentage of Britons who said King Charles was doing a good job spiked to 63% in the immediate aftermath of the Queen's death, according to a survey by YouGov, an online research firm. Twelve months later, more recent surveys from YouGov and others indicate this overall support has dropped off a little, to 60%, compared with 32% who hold a negative view of his performance.
