FBI Director Christopher Wray will resign next month as President Joe Biden's term ends, announcing his decision two days after a key Senate Republican urged his departure and amid President-elect Donald Trump's calls for a replacement.
"After weeks of careful thought, I’ve decided the right thing for the Bureau is for me to serve until the end of the current administration in January and then step down," Wray, 57, informed FBI employees on Wednesday, according to a bureau statement. Appointed by Trump in 2017, Wray faced criticism over investigations into Russian interference in 2016 and classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.
"The resignation of Christopher Wray is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice," Trump stated on social media. For Trump supporters, Wray’s exit marks another victory after the president-elect’s political resurgence despite his criminal cases.
