Nazi Germany was the target of sustained attack by the Allies throughout the Second World War. But it was Adolf Hitler's refusal to admit defeat in the closing months of the conflict that led to massive destruction of German infrastructure and additional war-related deaths numbering in the tens of thousands. In 1945, most of the country was in ruins, and while the degree of destruction varied regionally, it was major cities and places strongly associated with National Socialism and Nazi ideology that bore the brunt of the Allied onslaught.
