Ex Libris: a visual history of bookplates
Exquisite book ownership labels from the past
LIFESTYLE Books
Ex Libris, or bookplates, were the equivalent of a tag saying "this books belongs to x." Of course, these were much more elaborate works of art compared to a simple ownership label. Bookplates would often include artwork that would reflect the owner's vision and status. Many included coats of arms, mottos, crests, and a myriad of symbols. The first known bookplates date back to the 1400s, but, sadly, their use was mostly discontinued in the 20th century.
