The proprietor of the Bates Motel has severe psychological issues. His disturbing tendencies include spying on guests, stabbing them in the shower, and dressing up as his deceased mother. First appearing in Hitchcock's 'Psycho' (1960), Bates reappears in several sequels, a remake, and the popular TV series 'Bates Motel.'

Buffalo Bill -

Jame Gumb, known as "Buffalo Bill," is the main antagonist in Thomas Harris' 1988 novel 'The Silence of the Lambs' and its famous 1991 film adaptation, masterfully portrayed by Ted Levine. He is a serial killer with gender dysphoria who targets overweight women, murdering and skinning them to create a "woman suit" for himself.

Valak, or The Nun -

The villain of 'The Conjuring' franchise is a demon from Hell who rises to Earth to possess and torment. Valak debuted by possessing young Janet Hodgson and appearing to Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) as a pale-faced nun. The demon's influence continued with two spin-offs, solidifying Valak as a staple of modern horror.

Michael Myers -

The villain who practically birthed the slasher genre in 1978's 'Halloween.' Unlike some of the villains in this gallery, Myers lacks personality or emotion, embodying a cold, silent, remorseless killer—the true boogeyman. Many sequels and reboots depict Myers escaping imprisonment or apparent death to torment Laurie Strode again.

Regan MacNeil, or Pazuzu -

In the 1973 classic 'The Exorcist,' an innocent girl named Regan starts exhibiting bizarre behavior initially blamed on puberty. As things get worse, her mother discovers that Regan is possessed by the demon Pazuzu. Although the demon is eventually exorcised, it repeatedly returns to torment Regan and others in the sequels and prequels.

Art the Clown -

A truly memorable villain, not just for his appearance, but for David Howard Thornton's portrayal of him as a psychopathic clown obsessively searching for the perfect gag. The character first appeared in Damien Leone's short film ‘The 9th Circle’ (2008), and since then has taken on a more prominent role in Leone's feature horror films, including the 'Terrifier' series.

The Predator -

Imagined as a clever allegory for the Vietnam War, the merciless alien lured Arnold Schwarzenegger and his squadron into the jungle, hunting them one by one guerrilla-style in 'Predator' (1987). Its invisibility and advanced weaponry captured imaginations worldwide, so the Predator continues its deadly rampage in sequels and 'Alien' crossovers.

Despite appearing in just one scene, the Pale Man from the intriguing 'Pan's Labyrinth' (2006) is a certified horror villain that no one will ever forget. With pale skin and eyes on his hands, this well-known monster has a taste for children, devouring them in his hideous lair.

Ellie -

Few villains terrify as much as the murderous mother. The 'Evil Dead' franchise, known for its explicit violence and gore, takes this archetype to new heights. Possessed by unholy spirits, Ellie morphs into a nightmare that haunts her children; she first dies in front of them, only to return and attempt to tear them apart with everyday household items.
