Artificial colors, like red dye 40, are added to some foods to provide or enhance color. They are petroleum-based chemicals that do not occur in nature. Red dye 40 was approved for use in 1971 and is one of the most commonly used food dyes in the US. Despite its prevalence, some studies show it may worsen attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in some children.
