Not so long ago, there were the first bird flu cases among cows confirmed in the United States, causing concerns about dairy and milk consumption. Earlier in September, there was the first case of a person from the United States testing positive for the virus, even though it was found that they did not have any known exposure to infected animals.
Now, reports are in of the first person in Canada to test positive for H5 avian flu. Authorities are currently investigating the case, suspecting the infection was transmitted from a bird or animal. Even though the contagion is rare among humans and is more prevalent in cattle, scientists are worried that the growing number of transmissions could cause the virus to mutate, enabling humans to pass it on from one to another.
While scientists stress that the risk to public health is low, this latest development once again highlights the potential threat posed by this highly contagious infection. So, how concerned should we be?
