Police killings are sometimes inevitable, but there are some cities across the nation where they occur more often. In this gallery, we list the top 30 hotspots in the country when it comes to deadly police incidents.
The data was taken from the period between January 2020 and October 2024, and it ranks cities based on deadly incidents per 100,000 people, based on the total population. This means that, in some cases, fewer people may have died in a city, but the percentage of fatal police incidents is in fact higher taking into account the city's population.

A total of 17 people (4.4 per 100,000) were killed in the city between January 2020 and October 2024. Over 23% of the victims were unarmed.
San Antonio comes next, with the number of documented police killings reaching 4.5 per 100,000 people. In total, 65 people lost their lives.
A total of 11 people (4.7 per 100,000) lost their lives at the hands of the police. Among those killed in Boise, 36.4% showed signs of mental illness.
An average of 4.8 per 100,000 people were killed by the police in Fontana. A total of 11 people died, 50% of whom were Hispanic.
Documented police killings amount to 4.8 per 100,000 people. In total, 10 people died in Fayetteville, 40% of whom were unarmed.
Police also killed 10 people in Little Rock (4.9 per 100,000 people). With regards to ethnicity, 40% were white and 60% were black. All victims were male.
Tacoma comes next with 5 per 100,000 people killed by the police. Among the 11 people who lost their lives, 36.4% showed signs of a mental illness.
A total of 21 people (5.1 per 100,000) died in Tulsa at the hands of the police. The vast majority of the victims were male (95.2%).
A total of 5.2 per 100,000 people were involved in deadly police incidents. A total of 28 people died in Tucson between January 2020 and October 2024.
St. Louis is in position 21 when it comes to police killings. A total of 16 people (5.4 per 100,000) lost their lives in the city, 18.8% of whom were not carrying a weapon.
A total of 28 people (5.7 per 100,000) were involved in fatal police incidents in Atlanta. Over 80% of the victims were black.
The South Texas city comes next on the ranking, with 5.7 per 100,000 people dying at the hands of the police. A total of 18 people lost their lives.
A total of 5.7 per 100,000 people (11 individuals) were killed by the police in Knoxville. Among those killed, 36.4% showed signs of a mental illness.
Miami has had 26 documented police killings between January 2020 and October 2024. That's 5.9 per 100,000 people.
Out of the 12 people (6.4 per 100,000) killed by the police in Shreveport, 33.3% of them were unarmed.
Orlando ranks in the middle of the table with 6.5 per 100,000 people killed in police incidents, or 20 in total. Those with signs of a mental illness amount to 30%.
A total of 15 people (6.6 per 100,000) were killed by the police in Spokane. Of those, 66.7% were white.
There were 27 documented police killings in Bakersfield, which translate into 6.7 per 100,000 people. Regarding the ethnicity of the victims, 74.1% were Hispanic.
Salem comes next, with 6.8 per 100,000 people involved in deadly police incidents. A total of 12 people lost their lives, 33.3% of whom showed signs of a mental illness.
The number of documented police killings in Las Vegas is 45. This means that seven in 100,000 people were killed by the police.
Jackson is the first city in the top 10, with 7.2 per 100,000 people being involved in fatal police incidents. A total of 11 people were killed, 72.7% of whom were black.
A total of 10 people (7.4 per 100,000) were killed by the police in Victorville, 20% of whom were unarmed.
There have been 15 confirmed police killings in Salt Lake City during the period between January 2020 and October 2024. A total of 60% of the victims were white.
A total of 11 people were killed by cops in Savannah. This means that 7.5 in 100,000 people were involved in deadly police incidents.
Amarillo had 7.5 per 100,000 people die at the hands of the police. The total number of lives lost amounts to 15.
In fifth position we have San Bernardino. A total of 17 people died in the city, which translates to 7.7 per 100,000.
In Albuquerque, eight per 100,000 people were killed by the police. In total, 45 people lost their lives, 33.3% of whom showed signs of a mental illness.
Evansville is in the top three cities where police kill the most people. There have been 12 deaths in total, which translates into 10.3 per 100,000 people being involved in deadly police incidents.
The runner-up in Las Cruces. The city in New Mexico has registered 13 fatalities. This means that 11.7 per 100,000 people hand a deadly encounter with the police, 61.5% of whom were Hispanic.
Pueblo, Colorado takes the top spot as the deadliest spot when it comes to police incidents. A total of 16 people were killed, which considering the total population, equates to 14.4 per 100,000 people.
