According to the Constitution of the United States, the Cabinet's role is to advise the president on a number of subjects, pertinent to each member’s respective office.
The vice president serves by statute, but all heads of departments must be appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. In total, there are 26 members in the Cabinet. These include the vice president, 15 heads of department (e.g. secretaries), and 10 officials (e.g. directors, administrators, etc.).
