Being a guest is something that should be celebrated, and hosts should be treated with respect and dignity. With that said, are there any specific etiquette rules we should follow when visiting or staying at someone's home? Of course!

If you want to bring someone to a person’s home, it’s best to ask them in advance. A surprise extra guest can be an embarrassing situation for everyone.
This is just a matter of courtesy. Whether or not you’re staying at someone’s home, if you’re visiting, don’t show up empty-handed.
Bring a bottle of wine, a sweet treat, flowers, or whatever you think is suitable for the person and the occasion.
Not everyone takes their shoes off at home, but it’s good manners to do so as a guest. When in doubt, just ask.

We all check our phones from time to time. But endless sessions of doomscrolling will just signal that you’re bored and not enjoying your host’s company.
Pigging out at your host’s expense is just rude. This is especially true if food is being shared between other people.
The same goes for drinking, especially if it involves alcohol. Now you're not just rude, but rude and drunk. In which case, it’s good manners to add your own drinks to the table (i.e. don’t bring a bottle of pop and drink all the wine).

Leaving your belongings spread across someone's home is not very nice. Hang your coat, don’t leave your socks in the bathroom, keep your phone and other stuff in a designated area of the home, and so on.
This one stands true, even for men visiting their buddy’s bachelor pad. Put the seat down to prevent water (and other stuff) from splashing everywhere. It's just good manners!
We’re talking about doing so on furniture. Your host may want you to feel at home, but when it comes to putting your feet up, there’s a fine line between being comfortable and being rude.
If you really need to put your feet up, ask for a foot stool or establish on what terms it would be okay to do so.
Drinks can leave marks on tables and other pieces of furniture. The solution is to use coasters. Check if there are any available, or ask for them.
If your host has no coasters, at least place a napkin underneath your cup or glass to avoid unwanted stains.
Even if you attend a big party at someone’s home, be mindful not to make a mess. Mind your drinks and food, as well as things such as wrapping papers, balloons, or any other party accessories.
Putting yourself in the shoes of your host usually does the trick. You can't go wrong if you follow this simple mantra: always treat your guest's home as you'd want your home treated.
