In the 15th and 16th centuries, explorers and conquerors from the Iberian Peninsula dominated the world's waters, sending ships across the globe. These Spanish and Portuguese expeditions were often lead by noblemen seeking riches and fame. Known as Conquistadors, they were, however, drawn from all sectors of society. They 'discovered' lands that were beforehand unknown to Europeans, and pursued violent encounters with native populations in order to gain territory, loot, and plunder.
